Every element in a mix sits somewhere in three dimensions. Left to right is the pan control and it is easy. Up and down is frequency and it is the EQ course. Front to back is depth, and it is the one most people never deliberately set — which is why so many mixes sound like a flat wall of sound with reverb sprayed over it.
