Every system that carries audio — a microphone, a preamp, a converter, a cable, a room, an entire PA — has a ceiling it cannot exceed and a floor it cannot get below. The gap between them is its dynamic range, and almost every practical question about recording levels is really a question about where you are sitting inside that gap.
