Why You Believe the First Sound

Your ears take the direction of a sound from whatever arrives first and treat everything for the next 30 milliseconds as space — even when the later arrival is louder. It is why rooms do not destroy localization, and it is a tool.

Sit in any ordinary room and listen to someone talking. Most of the acoustic energy reaching you did not come from them directly — it came off the walls, the ceiling, the floor and the furniture, arriving from every direction at once, and in a live room it substantially outweighs the direct sound.
