Spaced Pairs (A-B): Recording the Room

Move two microphones properly apart and the stereo image stops being built from level and starts being built from time. It is the most spacious-sounding technique there is, and the most vulnerable — both for the same reason.

Coincident technique eliminates arrival-time differences and builds the image from level alone. Spaced technique does the opposite: it separates the microphones far enough that timing becomes the dominant cue and level differences become almost irrelevant.
