An Order of Operations, and Why It Is That Order

Almost nothing about mixing is agreed on, except that a mix should suit the music, the song and the people. From there, the sequence you work in is not tradition — most 'EQ problems' are level problems, and doing it the other way round makes you solve them twice.

There is remarkably little agreement about mixing. Everybody has their own ideas, the ideas change, and even engineers who reliably produce good mixes often cannot explain what they did. The people you are working for are frequently in a worse position still — they know what they want and cannot describe it, because they do not have the vocabulary or know what the equipment does.
